The Guardian Dismantles Food Assistance Falsehoods

This program is being dismantled from the inside out by Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins. The reasoning? Fraud.

Rollins has been shopping around a completely unsupported claim that 14,000 SNAP recipients owned luxury cars — Bentleys, Ferraris, Teslas. And this is the claim she used to justify slashing 4.3 million people from the program, arguing that "most" of the cuts targeted fraudulent claimants.

Quick maths: 14,000 out of 4.3 million is 0.32%. That does not qualify as "most."

Then Rollins had the nerve to tweet that she was doing this to protect our nation's most vulnerable people - a claim I had already disproven through my work connecting SNAP enrollment to poverty rates for every U.S. county. And I did it using her own data, downloaded directly from the USDA and Census Bureau.

Venting helped, but it didn't get me any closer to exposing Rollins's lies about SNAP - until The Guardian called and featured my work in this piece.
