What is Data 4 The People?
A vehicle to restore a basis of shared truth.

We live in strange times. The same technology that gives us unprecedented access to knowledge is, at the same time, keeping that knowledge from reaching us - tailoring our experience of "truth" to flatter us rather than inform us. We're caught in a loop, and breaking out of it takes real effort. Left alone, the path of least resistance runs one direction: toward the erosion of shared truth, shared reality, and the fragile democracy that depends on both.
It doesn't have to end there. We can push back against the tide and begin rebuilding the foundation of shared understanding that every thriving democracy rests on. And that starts with forming a healthier relationship with our data.
Because our data isn't really ours anymore. It belongs to big tech, to corporate America, to investors. Data is following the same path as income inequality - enriching the few while being used to divide the rest of us.
We have to reclaim the value buried in our nation's own data. That means securing it, cleaning it, and restructuring it so the latest technology can actually use it. It means respecting the ethics of data analysis: analysis is not hunting for data to fit your narrative - it's learning what the narrative is from the data. And then it means practicing the lost art of storytelling, turning honest analysis into something interactive and visceral, something that pulls people out of their narrow, separate worlds and lets them see America whole.
This is what Data 4 The People was built to do. Our vision is to rebuild a shared understanding of truth using data. High-powered data analytics skills aren't just for the well-funded anymore - they're for all of us. AI is driving down the cost of rigorous, data-driven research, and those savings should be passed on to the People, not extracted by the status quo. So we're building the infrastructure to do exactly that: to put AI to work for us rather than against us, and to crack open the slow and expensive commissioned-research industry - opening it up to nonprofits, community advocacy groups, local journalists, and you.
This project is audacious. It's immense. But it's worth doing. Shared truth is the bedrock of a functioning democracy. Data is the bedrock of shared truth - but only if it's 4 The People.
So how can you support this work? A few ways:
- Sign up for our email list. Our content lives exclusively on data4thepeople.com - no social media - so this is the only way to know when we publish.
- Tell a friend (or three) about Data 4 The People, and ask them to sign up.
- Consider a donation, one-time or monthly. Our work is free to everyone - no paywall, no Substack model - but if you find value in it and have a few dollars to spare, you help keep it free for the many People who can't pay.
- Reach out about a project. Part of our mission is to disrupt commissioned research consulting. If you have a project that aligns with our moral compass - work that serves the social good - try us out. You'll be surprised how affordable this work can be.
- Partner with us through philanthropy. If you want to support our mission more deeply, get in touch. We're always looking for like-minded funders, especially during this precarious build-out phase. If you believe the responsible use of data and AI can help restore our democracy, we'd welcome the chance to apply for grants to do this essential work.
See you in the data,
